The Pirates added a potential starting pitcher yesterday by claiming Adonis Medina off waivers from the Phillies. The 25-year-old right-hander started two games and made five appearances last season for the Phils, and was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 11-and-two-thirds innings. He was 4-5 with a 5.05 ERA in seventeen starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Bucs will need to make a corresponding move in order to add Medina to the 40-man roster.
The Pirates also signed former Marlins, Reds, and Red Sox reliever Austin Brice to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league camp. Brice was 0-0 with a 6.59 ERA in thirteen games with the Red Sox last year.
This week, the Pirates have also signed one of their former starters, Chase De Jong, to a minor league deal and they’ve signed reliever Heath Hembree to a major league deal.
MLB yesterday announced the schedule adjustments to make up for games lost due to the labor stoppage. The Pirates will make up games against the Cardinals October 3rd through the 5th, and against the Reds with a split doubleheader in Cincinnati on May 7th and a single game stop at Cincy on July 7th.
