The Pirates won their second straight game yesterday, taking down the Reds thanks to another great pitching performance. Joe Block recaps the afternoon game.
Manager Donnie Kelly says it was a great day for Henry Davis.
The Bucs welcome another Central Division rival tonight as they open a long weekend series. Newly-recalled right-hander Mike Burrows makes the start for the Pirates against Milwaukee, which has not named their starter. The Pirates optioned pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski to Indianapolis yesterday and called up Burrows to take his spot in the rotation. Airtime is 6:15, first pitch at 6:40 on WCCS.
Starting pitcher Jared Jones underwent surgery yesterday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, but it was not Tommy John surgery. Instead, he opted for an InternalBrace procedure that does not involve full reconstruction. That is projected to shorten the recovery time from fourteen-to-sixteen months to ten-to-twelve months.
Kelly says he expects the hard-working Jones to “dominate” his rehab.
In other injury news, senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that infielder Enmanuel Valdez is out for the rest of the season after having left shoulder surgery. Reliever Colin Holderman’s right thumb injury will be examined next week by Dr. Don Sheridan in Arizona. Reliever Justin Lawrence will resume throwing in about three weeks after having a plasma-rich platelet injection in his sore elbow. Second baseman Nick Gonzalez will be examined today after getting hit by a pitch on his right hand during his ankle rehab at Indianapolis. And pitcher Hunter Barco has a ”mild muscle strain” in his shoulder and is throwing again with no timetable to return to pitching.
ALTOONA/MINORS
Altoona was rained out in Akron last night.
A notable performance from the Pirates’ High-A Greensboro game last night…third baseman Keiner Delgado was 4-for-6 for the Grasshoppers with three home runs in an 11-8 win over Asheville. Delgado was the player to be named later in the JT Brubaker trade with the Yankees last year.
