There are only eight Double-A and eight Triple-A girls basketball teams still alive in the PIAA state tournament. Both the Homer Center and River Valley girls are among them and both will be on the court tonight.
In the Double-A quarterfinal tonight at Central Cambria, the 25-4 Homer-Center Wildcats meet District 6 rival Bellwood-Antis. District 6 champion Homer-Center beat Burgettstown and Serra Catholic in the first two rounds of the playoffs while District 6 third-place finisher Bellwood-Antis, which is 23-6, beat Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and West Middlesex.
Wildcats coach Nick Moore says his girls will be ready for a very good Blue Devils team.
The winner tonight will play the winner of the game between Neshannock and Shenango, two WPIAL schools. Neshannock last week knocked Penns Manor out of the tournament.
For District 6 Triple-A champion River Valley the challenge tonight at Norwin High School is Freedom Area, which is 20-5 and was the third place team from the WPIAL this season. 23-4 River Valley has had two easy victories so far in the tournament, over Pequea Valley and Chestnut Ridge. Freedom has beaten Westmont Hilltop and trounced Greenville so far.
River Valley coach Ric Brown says his team’s playoff run has been about setting and reaching goals.
Tonight’s winner will face the winner of the game between WPIAL champ North Catholic and Forest Hills, which River Valley beat in the District 6 title game.
The Homer-Center game will be on WCCS, FM 101.1 and AM 1160, with the pregame at 6:40 and tipoff scheduled for 7 o’clock. River Valley’s game will be the second game of a doubleheader. Airtime on Cat Country 106.3 FM will be at about 7:15, depending on the ending of the first game, which is the North Catholic/Forest Hills game.
Both games will also be on the TribLive High School Sports Network, available as a direct link at each station’s website.
