The Steelers will host the NFL Draft next spring and it sure seems like they will be on the stage a lot. Or, they could use all that draft capital to move up and get a quarterback. Yesterday’s trade of wide receiver George Pickens to Dallas gives them five picks in the first three rounds of the draft – a first rounder, second rounder, and three in the third round.
The Steelers are the only NFL team in line for the maximum four compensatory picks in next year’s draft. If it works out according to general manager Omar Khan’s perceived plan, they could end up with two picks in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, and another in the seventh round, making a total of as many as twelve picks in the seven rounds.
The Cowboys traded their third round choice to the Steelers along with a swap of their fifth round pick for a Steelers’ sixth rounder.
Khan is expected to look into the free agency market to find a veteran wide receiver to replace Pickett.
