Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said yesterday he expects to add starting pitching and outfield depth through trades and free agency in the next couple of weeks as the accelerated Spring Training ramps up.
Cherington says he is anxious to see the Bucs’ young talent working out with the big leaguers at Major League camp.
First baseman/designated hitter Yoshi Tsutsugo has not arrived in Bradenton yet from Japan and infielder Hoy Park is in South Korea, where he has tested positive for covid-19. They are the only two absent Pirates at Spring Training.
The first Pirates exhibition game is on Friday against the Yankees. You will hear it on WCCS, 101.1 FM and AM 1160.

Baseball trades yesterday included the Braves acquiring All-Star first baseman Matt Olson from the A’s in a concession by Atlanta that they won’t be able to re-sign Freddie Freeman.
The Mariners got All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Reds for outfielder Jake Fraley, pitcher Justin Dunn, pitcher Brandon Williamson, and a player to be named later.
