Two Pirates pitching prospects are dominating their minor league opponents after one month of the season and both were honored on Monday by their respective leagues.
Indianapolis right-hander Bubba Chandler is the Triple-A International League Pitcher of the Month. Chandler leads all minor league pitchers (with at least twenty innings thrown) in fewest hits allowed with only ten. He has a 1.33 ERA with 27 strikeouts in five starts.
The Altoona Curve’s Hunter Barco is the Double-A Eastern League Pitcher of the Month for April. Including his lone start in May, the big left-hander has not allowed a run yet this season, pitching an Altoona-record 25-and-two-thirds shutout innings, allowing only eleven hits (second in all of baseball behind Chandler) and striking 34 batters.
Altoona opens a six-game series in Erie tonight.
