The Penguins finally got a win over Metro Division leader Carolina yesterday in their final regular season game against the Hurricanes.
Paul Steigerwald has the recap.
Coach Mike Sullivan says it was not a perfect game by his team, but they hung together in a frantic third period.
Sullivan says the Danton Heinen tip-in goal in the second period was set up by a strong play by Evgeni Malkin.
Sullivan benched defenseman Marcus Pettersson – the first time in his career that he’s been a healthy scratch – but the coach says it was not because Pettersson has played poorly. It’s because they have a deep group of blue-liners.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry says beating Carolina was an important step for the Pens.
Danton Heinen says it was great for the Penguins to get scoring from someone other than a member of the Sidney Crosby line.
The Penguins play three straight road games over the next week, with stops in Nashville tomorrow night, St. Louis on Thursday, and Arizona on Saturday. The Penguins are second behind Carolina in the Metro Division, with 81 points to the ‘Canes 87.
