The NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournaments begin today with women’s action, followed by the men tomorrow.
The IUP women are at Glenville State, where they will play Cal U. this afternoon, with a 2:00 airtime on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel. 21-8 IUP is the seventh seed in the Regional, while the 24-5 Vulcans are seeded second. The Crimson Hawks lost to Cal twice this season, 62-46 on January 31st and 64-59 on February 9th.
Should IUP win, they would play at 5:00 tomorrow against the winner of Kutztown’s game today against Charleston.
The IUP men are the top seed in the Atlantic Regional, and are hosting the tournament at the KCAC. Action gets underway tomorrow at noon with Cal U. playing Fairmont State. That’s followed at 2:30 with West Liberty tipping off against West Virginia State. Then comes the IUP game against Fayetteville State, from North Carolina. And the nightcap follows at 7:30, when Mercyhurst battles Millersville.
IUP is 29-2 and the champion of the PSAC. Fayetteville State is 21-8 and the winner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title.
Coach Joe Lombardi said on Hawk Talk on U92 last night that his team members overcame a lot to get to the tournament, starting with the season last year being canceled by the pandemic.
Lombardi says Fayetteville State is very talented, especially at guard, and his youngest players will have to overcome their inexperience at the tournament level.
The airtime for IUP/Fayetteville State tomorrow is 4:30 on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel. With a win, the IUP men would play the semifinal game on Sunday against the winner of the game between PSAC rivals Mercyhurst and Millersville.
The women’s regional championship game is scheduled for Monday. The men’s title game is slated for Tuesday.
