Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spent the weekend at the NFL’s annual meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, as part of the competition committee that is considering five rules changes, including the potential outlawing of the “tush push”, the quarterback sneak play that the Philadelphia Eagles have used so effectively. Tomlin says it’s been the subject of “hot debate” in the committee meetings. There are also proposed kickoff changes and the league is also discussing expanding the regular season to 18 games. New rules proposals will be up for a vote by the owners this week.
Tomlin also discussed free agency, saying he’s enjoyed getting to know Aaron Rodgers and he has no timeline on a Rodgers decision, he is excited with the acquisition of wide receiver DK Metcalfe, and he is not disappointed with the Steelers’ failure to sign a high-profile defensive lineman. He said, “Sometimes, you’re able to check some boxes. Sometimes, you aren’t. When you check a box in free agency, you don’t have to check it in the draft and vice versa.”
