The Homer-Center girls won the school’s first-ever District 6 championship last night in stunning fashion. The Penns Manor boys ran into a red-hot Portage team and had to settle for second in the district.
In other District 6 Double-A action, the West Shamokin boys won their consolation game against United while Penns Manor’s girls fell to Bellwood Antis.

In the consolation games, Penns Manor’s girls lost to Bellwood-Antis, 59-44. The Comets will head into the state tournament as the number four team from District 6. The Blue Devils got it done inside and outside, hitting five three-pointers. Megan Dumm got hot in the second half and ended up with 19 points for the Comets. After falling behind by 19 in the second half, Penns Manor scored 13 unanswered, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
The West Shamokin boys avenged their Heritage Conference championship game loss to United with a 46-33 win over the Lions on United’s floor. The Wolves’ Trevor Smulik led all scorers with 16 points. Lou Swartz added 12. Smulik had only two field goals, but hit 12 free throws. West Shamokin shot 23 foul shots in the game, while United did not shoot any. The Lions did not have any players core more than six points. West Shamokin finishes third in the district while United will enter the playoffs as the District 6 number four team.
In the boys Double-A bracket, getting under way next Wednesday, Penns Manor will get the number three team from District 9, which will be determined tonight when Karns City plays Keystone. West Shamokin will play the second place finisher from District 9, which will be either Redbank Valley or Ridgway. United will play the WPIAL champion, which will be either Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) or Fort Cherry.
In girls Double-A, which starts on Tuesday, Homer Center will play the seventh team from the WPIAL, and Penns Manor will play the WPIAL champ. The order of finish in the WPIAL won’t be determined until after the championships are completed this afternoon.
Of the two other local teams in the state tournament, District 6 Triple-A champion River Valley will play Pequea Valley on Tuesday and Indiana High must wait until after the WPIAL brackets are complete to find out their opponent. They will play next Wednesday.
