The Pirates’ bullpen melted down yesterday, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 15-0 hole on the away to a 15-3 loss to the Twins in Fort Myers, Florida.
Jared Jones gave up one run in four-and-a-third innings, then Jack Carey surrendered four and David Bednar five more, with Bednar only managing to get one out in the 6th inning. Darick Hall and Matt Gorski homered for the Pirates in the 9th.
Jones says his spring training form is coming together.
Bailey Falter was supposed to start yesterday but the lefty was held out because of “general body soreness”, according to senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk.
Ke’Bryan Hayes has been cleared for all baseball activities and is expected back in the lineup as early as this weekend after dealing with tightness in his left side. First baseman Spencer Horwitz has begun hitting off a tee and tossing a medicine ball. It will be another 10 to 14 days before the Pirates get him into a game.
The Bucs will send Andrew Heaney to the mound to face the Tigers tonight, on WCCS at 6 o’clock.
