The Pirates lost to the Tigers yesterday, 5-3, in spring training baseball. Tommy Pham homered and threw out a runner at second base but had to leave the game with a stiff hip after a misstep in the outfield. Joey Bart had three hits for the Bucs and right fielder Bryce Johnson had two.
Making his second start, left-hander Andrew Heaney gave up four runs on five hits and two walks in 2-and-a-third innings of work. The newcomer Heaney says he has always started slowly in the spring, but he’s happy with his progress.

Former Pirate Gerritt Cole is seeking a second opinion after a recommendation that he have Tommy John surgery. He’s pitched six innings in two starts this spring.
