At 7:20 this morning, Punxsutawney Phil made his prognostication for the year at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney. Jeff Lundy, vice president of the Groundhog Club Inner Circle delivered what many feel may be bad news, as Phil’s prediction read, “My faithful followers, I clearly see a perfect, clear shadow of me. Six more weeks of winter it will be!”
This marks the 103rd time that Phil has seen his shadow in the 131 years of the annual Groundhog Day celebrations in Punxsy, while he has not seen his shadow 18 times, and there have been 10 years where records are not available.
The tradition of Punxsutawney Phil goes back to the 1880’s, when the first trek to Gobbler’s knob was made by the Inner Circle. The celebration gained fame thanks to the Bill Murray film Groundhog Day released in 1993.
