The Penguins won their second straight game yesterday, another one-goal victory on the road against a Metro Division team.
Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the 1-0 win over the Rangers on Saturday and the 3-2 win last night over the Blue Jackets were the kinds of games he wants his team to play.
Sullivan says he felt there would be a chance on the power play in the third period, and there was, resulting in Evgeni Malkin’s goal.
Malkin had the game’s only goal on Saturday and the game-tying goal last night. Sullivan says it took a lot of work by a lot of people to get him to the point he is now after major off-season knee surgery.
Goaltender Casey DeSmith is slowly rounding back into form during an injury-filled season, and he says he is finding his game.
Defenseman Mark Friedman, who swept a puck off the goal line behind DeSmith in the third period, has been a healthy scratch for most of this season’s games, but is back in the lineup due to Mike Matheson’s injury. He says he’s worked hard to be ready when called upon.
With the win, the Penguins are three points ahead of the Rangers, in second place in the NHL Metro Division. They’re four points behind Carolina.
The Penguins are off until Thursday, when they start a two-game road trip against two of the top teams in the NHL, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes, on consecutive nights.
