Indiana County’s drug treatment court announced yesterday that two participants have successfully completed their program.
The drug treatment court is part of an effort to reduce recidivism when it comes to drug-related crimes, promote public safety, and rehabilitate and improve treatment outcomes and the lives of the participants and their families. The six-step, intensive supervision program is designed to help the participants gain the skills needed to be successful in life. A person is eligible for the program if they have a substance abuse disorder, who committed certain non-violent crimes. They must meet criteria that indicates supervision would not be considered a substantial risk for the community and that they are interested in addressing their treatment needs.
Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi said that the program is a proven method to reduce crime and participation in the program saves taxpayer dollars. He said in the case of the two who recently graduated, they would have been in jail for at least 730 days, but because of the program, the taxpayers were saved $130,000 in costs associated with incarceration.
