Homer-Center senior Corey Cavalier scored from third on an infield single by senior Austin Perry in the seventh inning, and the Wildcats defeated Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy, 4-3, Wednesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field for the District 6 Class A championship.
Perry and sophomore Cobe Daugherty led the team with two hits each. Senior Dakota Sunday pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief and was credited with the mound win.
Homer-Center scored once in the first inning and twice in the second to hold the early 3-0 lead. Saint Joseph’s plated three runs in the third inning to tie the score.
Sunday was the last of four Homer-Center pitchers. Junior Nate Davis started and pitched into the fifth inning. He was relieved by senior Michael Ginter, who then gave way to Perry.
Homer-Center improved to 19-1 and won its fifth District 6 championship as Homer-Center (Homer City won in the 1953 and Laura Lamar won in 1961). The Wildcats advanced to the PIAA Class A playoffs and will play the runner-up in the WPIAL on June 4 at a venue to be determined.
