Yesterday morning’s snow may have been a factor in a couple of crashes within minutes of each other on Route 22 in Derry Township. State police say the first of those crashes, at 10:38 AM, happened about a half-mile east of Ten School Road when a 20-year-old woman from North Carolina spun out as she tried to pass traffic that was slowing, striking the vehicle in front of her. No one was hurt.
Five minutes later, there was another accident on Route 22 at the Route 981 intersection. Police say a car driven by 32-year-old Krista Carland of Altoona rear-ended a pickup truck operated by 32-year-old Justin Williams of Shelocta, which was stopped on 981 at the red light. Williams had four passengers in his vehicle, a 30-year-old woman from Lucernemines and three children, ages 7, 5, and 4. No one was injured.
Also yesterday, Marion Center firefighters were dispatched for an accident on Route 119 in Rayne Township, where a car spun off the road and took out a utility pole. The fire company reports no injures. Saltsburg and Tunnelton firefighters were sent to an accident on Clarksburg Road in Conemaugh Township, again with no injuries.
All of the accidents happened in the 10 AM hour, when there were near-whiteout conditions caused by snow squalls.
