The Penguins refused to fold last night and were rewarded with a win in their first trip ever to Salt Lake City. Here’s Paul Steigerwald.
Coach Mike Sullivan applauded the efforts of Rickard Rakell and Sidney Crosby on the game-winning play.
Alex Ndeljkovic made 27 saves in the game. In addition to Erik Karlsson and Crosby, Marcus Pettersson had the other Penguins goal.
Blake Lizotte and Jesse Puljujarvi returned to the Penguins’ lineup. Lizotte had missed three games due to illness and Puljujarvi was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take the place of Evgeni Malkin, who is on injured reserve.
The Penguins will play Nashville on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena, then play three games next week against Metro Division rivals before taking a two-week break for the Four Nations Faceoff, the international tournament featuring teams from the U.S., Canada, Sweden, and Finland.
A note from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton…the two young prospects acquired by the Penguins last year in the Jake Guentzel trade with Carolina combined for seven goals last night in a 9-0 shutout of the Hershey Bears. Ville Koivunen scored four goals and Vasily Ponamarev had three.
