The Pirates yesterday won their arbitration case with pitcher Johan Oviedo, who will be paid $850,000 this season instead of his request for $1.15 million. He made $765,000 last season. Oviedo did not pitch last season after having Tommy John surgery. If healthy, he is expected to contend for the fifth starter slot in the Bucs’ rotation.
Oviedo did not pitch in 2024 after having Tommy John surgery. He was 9-14 with a 4.32 ERA two seasons ago.
Reliever Dennis Santana had his arbitration hearing yesterday. He wants a raise from $1 million to $2.1 million. The Pirates offered $1.4 million. Santana was 3-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 62 relief appearances last year for the Yankees and Pirates.
