A decision is expected today in the arbitration case argued yesterday between the Pirates and pitcher Johan Oviedo. The 27-year-old right-hander is seeking a raise from $765,000 to $1.15 million. The Pirates submitted an arbitration figure of $850,000. Oviedo missed last season recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Reliever Dennis Santana is the other Pirate scheduled for arbitration. He’s asking for $2.1 million and the Pirates are offering $1.4 million. He made an even million dollars last year. The date of his arbitration hearing has not been set.
The Pirates yesterday agreed to a one-year, $1.525 million major league contract with infielder/outfielder Adam Frazier, the former All-Star whom the Bucs traded to San Diego for Jack Suwinski in 2021. He had a bad year at the plate in 2024, hitting only .202 with four home runs for the Royals, coming off a good season playing for Baltimore in ’23, when he hit .240 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs.
The Bucs also yesterday re-signed left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki. It’s a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp when it opens two weeks from today. Borucki missed most of last season with triceps inflammation followed by carpal tunnel syndrome.
