Most of the area served by the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County is under a voluntary water conservation request.
The authority says that the recent cold snap and thaw afterwards has stressed the water system’s infrastructure and supply. The freeze-thaw cycle could cause some water line breaks and leaks within the system, and water levels in reservoirs and local tanks were also affected as customers let the taps run overnight to prevent a freeze of their water pipes.
The conservation request is being seen as a temporary measure to help replenish water supplies and to allow crews to fully inspect and repair the water delivery system. The authority is advising against any drastic use of water for now, including washing cars.
The authority’s service area does reach into Indiana County. The only area not affected by the conservation request is Ligonier.
