Six fire companies were called out to deal with only the second brush fire of the year yesterday.
The call first went out at 10:39 AM, according to Indiana County 911, with Black Lick and Blairsville fire departments initially dispatched to a field near McConnell Road in Black Lick Township. Coal Run-McIntyre, Aultman, Homer City and Coral-Graceton fire departments were called out eight minutes later to assist on-scene. Brush Valley fire crews were sent out to provide standby detail for Homer City later in the hour.
Black Lick fire officials say that a rubbish fire had spread rapidly to some brush in a pasture field. When they arrived and saw the size of the fire, they called for the additional manpower. Black Lick and Blairsville brush trucks worked the perimeter of the fire area, but because of muddy conditions, they could not make it up the hill in their trucks. UTVs from the other departments were able to make it up the hill and contain the fire at the top flank. Once the fire was out, crews stayed on-scene to check for hot spots.
It’s estimated that 8.36 acres of pasture was burned in the fire. There were no reported injuries.
