Pitt was a 13-and-a-half point underdog last night at North Carolina, but the Panthers took control early and then held off the Tar Heels in the second half to win their third straight ACC game, 76-67. Pitt led by 21 points approaching the eight minute mark of the second half before withstanding a North Carolina run at the end.
Pitt’s John Hugley outplayed Tar Heels star Armando Bacot, scoring 18 points and holding Bacot to only seven. Five Panthers were in double figures, led Ithiel Horton, who hit five three-pointers on his way to 19. Jamarius Burton scored 14, Mouhamadou Gueye 11, and Femi Odukale 10.
Coach Jeff Capel says the Panthers first-half defense keyed the win.
Pitt is 11-16 and 6-10 in the ACC. They’ll play on Saturday at night against Georgia Tech at the Petersen Events Center.
