The cold weather advisories that have been in effect for the past two days will come to an end today.
The National Weather Service Cold Weather Advisory for most of Indiana County and the Extreme Cold Warning for the upper elevations will end at 1:00 this afternoon. Low temperatures throughout the day along with winds will put the feels-like temperatures in the 15 to 20 below zero range. That can cause both hypothermia and frostbite on exposed skin in a very short period of time.
People are advised to wear layers of clothing if they have to go out, including hat, mittens or gloves, scarf and waterproof boots. And pets should be kept inside as much as possible during this period. People are also asked to check on their neighbors to see if they need help.
Warming shelters like the Indiana Free Library and Chevy Chase Community Center remain open during normal operating hours.
