After many discussions in regular and committee meetings, the River Valley School Board approved a bond issue to pay for new athletic venues during a special meeting of the board on Thursday.
While the baseball and softball fields are still up in the air, the board voted to move forward with the bond issue to work on getting a new football field in place at the Blairsville campus. Board president Rick Harper said that this is part of building a school for all students, and that Ernie Widmar Field at Memorial Stadium is no longer cutting it.
The bond issue is for $7 million and is expected to extend the districts debt payments of $2 million a year until 2035. The vote passed 5-3 with Nathan Baird, Jessica Clawson and Melanie Pantalone voting against the measure.
