After a spike near the end of the year, the pace of new flu cases in Pennsylvania slowed down considerably, and over the last week, that pace has stayed relatively the same.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that for the week ending on February 5th, 32,450 lab-confirmed cases of influenza were reported in the state. The majority of those cases are Type A flu, with 29,770 cases reported. Another 2,660 reported cases are classified as Type B flu. The remaining 20 cases have been marked unclassified. This represents an increase of about 1,000 new cases across the state, which was close to the number of new cases from the previous week.
In Indiana County, 212 lab-confirmed cases of flu were reported, with 164 type A cases and 48 type B flu cases reported.
So far this flu season, 30 people in Pennsylvania have died from influenza, including 18 people over the age of 65, seven people between 50 and 64, and five people between the ages of 19 and 49. No deaths were reported in those 18 years of age or younger.
