As we count down to 2025 in Indiana County, let’s look back and revisit some of the biggest stories from 2024.
The most captivating story of the year was arguable the presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Trump made history by holding a campaign rally at the KCAC on September 23rd, becoming the first candidate to visit Indiana County since John F. Kennedy in 1960
Homer City and Center Township both have seen significant changes over the last 12 months. Recently, Homer City Borough passed a budget eliminating police chief Anthony Jellison’s position but at the same time, it saved residents from paying more in taxes. That came during a special voting meeting earlier this month.
Center Township got some clarity on the future of the power plant property and Power Plant Road. That came at a meeting led by former-Commissioner Robin Gorman, who announced her resignation in September to become the vice president of Homer City Redevelopment, LLC.
Indiana County also saw its share of weather-related incidents and catastrophes. The most notable incident was the flooding that triggered voluntary evacuation efforts in Clymer back in April. That flooding also destroyed the area’s ballfields, but community members laced up their boots and got the fields in working order for the little league season.
Speaking of emergencies, Indiana County saw 86 brush fires in 2024. Many of them came during the dry fall season which triggered burn bans in Indiana, Homer City, and Blairsville Boroughs, as well as several other municipalities around the county.
Lastly, Indiana County saw several athletic achievements. IUP’s rugby team defended its national title two weeks ago; Indiana High’s swimming team captured their first-ever state championship in October, Nico Fanella was the state runner-up in freestyle wrestling in May, and the baseball team came just short of a state title; and the Marion Center girls’ basketball team became the third area team in two years to compete for a state basketball championship. The 14U Indiana All-Star softball team also etched their names in the history books after finishing fourth in the nation at the Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington, over the summer.
