Number three-seed IUP plays #8 Bowie State for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship tonight in Richmond, Virginia. IUP is 28-3 after Saturday’s thrashing of Glenville State. Bowie State is 22-9 and coming off wins over top-seed Virginia Union and PSAC champion Edinboro, which they beat by four on Saturday.
IUP is making its third regional title game appearance, having split the first two. The Crimson Hawks are seeking their second Elite Eight appearance, the first having come in 1999. Saturday’s 20-point win over Glenville State set a single-season school record of 28 wins for Coach Tom McConnell’s Hawks.
IUP leads the all-time series with Bowie State 6-1, and the Crimson Hawks are 2-0 against Bowie State this season, defeating the Bulldogs 53-37 in Maryland on November 22nd and 61-54 at the KCAC on December 7th. McConnell is 4-1 lifetime against Bowie State.
