Scammers are especially busy in the holiday season, and yet another attempt to separate you from your money was brought to light this week. The old Pennsylvania Turnpike scam is back. People across the state have been getting text messages saying they have unpaid turnpike tolls. The texts contain a link to pay the bill, but it’s phony, and you should not click that link!
To find out if you have an unpaid turnpike balance, visit the real turnpike website at www.paturnpike.com.
In the past week, there have been other scam warnings from various agencies, including one from the Public Utility Commission about bogus look-alike websites that mimic the state’s official energy shopping platform (the official sites are PAPowerSwitch.com and PAGasSwitch.com); and there was a state police warning of a scam specifically targeting Indiana County residents involving a fictitious United States Postal Service website.
If you get a text or email claiming to be from USPS about a package awaiting action of a delivery failure, don’t click it…delete it. Police recommend verifying the legitimacy of any suspicious phone calls, emails, or texts before clicking on any websites, scanning any QR codes, or providing any personal or financial information.
