BASKETBALL
Pitt held the lead for most of the game Sunday against unbeaten Wisconsin, but the Badgers came from behind and handed the Panthers their first loss, 81-75.
Wisconsin’s John Tonje scored 33 points, 25 of them in the second half as Pitt played without guard Damian Dunn, who suffered a sprained ankle and dislocated thumb early in the game. The Panthers also were forced to play conservatively on defense with Ishmael Leggett, Cam Corhen and Guillermo Diaz Graham in foul trouble.
Leggett led Pitt with 17 points. Cam Corhen had 16 and Jaland Lowe 15. Pitt led by as many as 14 points in the first twenty minutes and by 7 at the half.
Coach Jeff Capel says Pitt grew as a team in the two games against LSU and Wisconsin.
A tough five-game road stretch continues on Friday afternoon when 6-1 Pitt travels to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 5-1 and play Green Bay today.
FOOTBALL
Pitt football coach Pat Narduzzi will hold his weekly media conference today with his team having lost four in a row after a 7-0 start. The latest loss was a 37-9 beatdown by Louisville in which quarterback Eli Holstein suffered an apparent serious ankle injury. He will likely miss the regular season finale at Boston College on Saturday afternoon. Nate Yarnell took over for Holstein but Narduzzi pulled him from the game in the fourth quarter, saying he did it to protect Yarnell from getting hurt before this week’s finale.
