Pitt overcame a sluggish start to beat Gardner-Webb, 83-64, at the Petersen Events Center last night. Ish Leggett led all scorers with 21 points and went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Damian Dunn and Cameron Corhen each tallied 12 points while Guillermo Diaz Graham hauled in nine rebounds.
Coach Jeff Capel said the Panthers struggled early against the Bulldogs’ zone defense, but it was a good learning curve for them.
Capel adds they need to do a better job guarding the paint.
The Panthers return to action Friday night for the hardwood edition of the Backyard Brawl. We’ll have that game starting at 7:30 on WCCS.
Five-star prospect Meleek Thomas opted not to play basketball at Pitt, and instead play for Arkansas. The 6-foot-3 guard, who was touted as one of the top shooters in the country, chose the Razorbacks over his hometown college and UConn last night.
