Mike Williams and Preston Smith joined the Steelers on Wednesday and had two days to learn their playbooks… and they did. Both contributed to the Steelers’ 28-27 come-from-behind win against the NFC East-leading Washington Commanders.
Russell Wilson connected with Williams on a 32-yard pass with a little over two minutes left in the game to put the Steelers out in front. The defense then forced Washington to turn the ball over on downs on their final drive to clinch the win.
Wilson finished 14-for-28 with 195 yards, three TD’s and an interception. George Pickens had five catches, 91 yards and a touchdown, Pat Freiermuth hauled in a three-yard touchdown after the Steelers recovered a muffed punt in the second, and Najee Harris posted a one-yard touchdown run. Smith, who was acquired from Green Bay at the trade deadline, had three tackles – one sack and two tackles for a loss – in his Steelers debut.
Coach Mike Tomlin was appreciative of all the efforts from his players.
Tomlin said his defense did the job in stopping Washington’s high-powered offense, which ranks fifth in the NFL in offensive efficiency.
Wilson said Williams’ go-ahead touchdown was another great moment for this hot Steelers offense.
Williams was grateful to have his number called late in the game.
Linebacker T.J. Watt said the defense worked hard to stop dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Linebacker Alex Highsmith left the game with an ankle injury and didn’t return. His father, Sam, said on X that they will know more either today or tomorrow. Safety Donte Jackson suffered a hamstring injury and did not return.
The Steelers hold a half-game lead on the Ravens in the AFC North, who they host at Acrisure Stadium this Sunday. Baltimore narrowly escaped the Bengals in a 35-34-win last Thursday. Cleveland was on its bye week.
Week 10 wraps up tonight when the Dolphins visit the Rams at SoFi Stadium.
