The Penguins have a quite busy week, following up Sunday’s shootout win over Winnipeg with a game tonight at PPG Paints Arena against Phoenix. The Pens are second in the Metropolitan Division, trailing the New York Rangers by three points, and they have the fifth-highest point total in the NHL. They’ve won 16 of their last 18 games, and five in a row.
The Coyotes are 10-26-4, the second-worst record in the league, and have lost their last two, 4-0 to the Islanders and 7-3 to the Rangers.
The Penguins learned yesterday that center Teddy Blueger will be out six to eight weeks after suffering a broken jaw Sunday on a bad hit, taking a shoulder to his face from Winnipeg defenseman Brenden Dillon, who smashed Blueger’s face off the glass below the goal line in the Jets’ zone. Dillon was not penalized and the NHL has not announced any disciplinary actions against him.
A recent theme for the Penguins has been that they continue to win despite not playing all that well. Coach Mike Sullivan says his guys know they are not playing up their high standards.
Sullivan says the Pens are grinding their way through their games but it hasn’t been easy lately.
The Pens follow up tonight’s game with games Thursday and Friday at home, against Seattle and Detroit. The airtime tonight for the Penguins and Coyotes is 6:00 on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel.
