On Monday night, the Indiana School Board approved an elementary reconfiguration plan that would end classes at Horace Mann Elementary School.
The plan approved by the Indiana School Board by an 8-1 vote will create two pre-K to third grade schools at East Pike and Ben Franklin Schools, and a fourth to fifth grade school at Eisenhower Elementary. Board President Walter Schroth said that one of the reasons he voted in favor of the plan was educational equity.
Another reason cited as a positive for the plan is the saving of half a million dollars each year, and it was the most effective use of staff and cut down on travel time for travelling staff.
Sue Rieg was the only one who voted against this plan, saying that those who took the district’s survey earlier in the process showed they preferred a second option, where the three elementary schools would become PreK to fifth grade schools.
Scrhoth was quick to point out that the Horace Mann building will not close right away. Discussion on what will be done with the building will be discussed at the committee level.
In other business, the board also authorized the administration work with Buchart Horn architects on a contract for the design and bidding of work required to implement changes connected with the new configuration option.
