Five Pirates players have elected to become free agents, and among them is fan favorite Andrew McCutchen.
In the past, the Pirates all-star has made it clear he wants to remain with the Bucs for another season, but he has decided to test the free agent waters. The others who have elected to go to free agency include relievers Jalen Beeks, Ryan Borucki and Aroldis Chapman along with catcher Yasmani Grandal.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton have advocated for McCutchen’s return next season, given his professional at-bats and clubhouse presence.
