The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry has announced that the unemployment rate for the state went down in December to 5.4 percent.
The report states that the rate went down by three-tenths of a percentage point during December. That mirrors the national unemployment rate’s decline of three-tenths of a percent to 3.9 percent. Over the last year, Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate has gone down 1.7 percentage points.
The state’s civilian labor force, which is the estimated number of residents working or looking for work, went down by 18,000 over the last month.
The total number of non-farm jobs went up by 14,300. Jobs increased in eight of the eleven published industry super sectors. The largest increase was seen in the trade, transportation and utilities super sector with a gain of 9,400. Over the last year, the number of total non-farm jobs went up by 202,200, with gains in 10 of 11 super sectors. The largest gain over the year was in the leisure and hospitality field with 80,400 jobs added. Other sectors are still below pre-pandemic levels.
Indiana County’s statistics are expected to be released later this month.
