In a Zoom call yesterday, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington and assistant GM Steve Sanders talked up the Bucs’ international signing class of 2022, which includes 19 players. The group includes eight pitchers and 11 position players.
Cherington also said the team will probably not replace coach Glenn Sherlock, who left to join Buck Showalter with the Mets. The Bucs’ GM says the team has other coaches who can do the things Sherlock did, particularly working with the catchers.
Baseball America yesterday released its annual list of the Top 100 Prospects in baseball, and the Pirates have six of them, tied with Arizona for the most of any team. The highest-rated is shortstop Oneil Cruz, at number 14. Catcher Henry Davis is #41, second baseman Nick Gonzalez is #49; shortstop Liover Peguero is #78, pitcher Roansy Contreras is #80 and pitcher Quinn Priester is #88.
Baseball America also listed each team’s top ten prospects. After the six in the Top 100, rounding out the top ten are catcher Endy Rodriguez and pitchers Michael Burrows, Jared Jones, and Carmen Mlodzinski.
