At the Indiana Borough Council Work Session on Tuesday night, council unanimously approved asking Solicitor Pat Dougherty to put together a draft ordinance that would decriminalize possession of a small amount of marijuana.
Under the proposal made by council member Kaycee Newell, possession of an ounce or less of marijuana and related paraphernalia would become a summary offense. Newell said that council has received several letters in favor of the idea. She also detailed the reasons why she wanted to bring this idea forward.
After the draft ordinance is created, it will go through the proper committees before it goes before council for advertisement and final approval.
In other business, the council approved two motions to nominate former Mayor George Hood for some high honors. The council will send nomination letters and applications to the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of PA for 2021 Mayor of the Year, and to the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs for the 2021 Distinguished Service Award.
