Jake Guentzel scored a goal 37 seconds into overtime as the Penguins beat the San Jose Sharks, 2-1, last night.
Louis Domingue made 40 saves in his Penguins debut. The off-season free agent signee was given the assignment to give Tristan Jarry a night off, with Jarry’s regular backup, Casey DeSmith, still on the team’s covid list.
Kris Letang scored the other Pittsburgh goal. Both of the goals in regulation were in the first period. Rudolfs Balcers scored for the Sharks at 7:01 of the period and Letang answered for the Pens at the 10:56 mark, taking a pass from Guentzel as he sped into the offensive zone and lifting a backhander over Sharks goaltender Adin Hill.
Guentzel’s game-winner came off a lengthy stretch pass by Letang to Sidney Crosby, who zipped into the offensive zone and crossed the goal mouth, slipping a pass back to the top of the crease for Guentzel’s tap-in.
The Penguins were outshot 28-12 in the first two periods and 41-27 in the game. They conclude their six-game road trip in Las Vegas tomorrow night.
