ESPN reports that Frank Cignetti Jr. will become Pitt’s new offensive coordinator, after serving in the same position for Boston College the last two seasons. The 56-year-old will replace Mark Whipple, who left Pitt for Nebraska.
It’s a return to Pitt for Cignetti, who was the Panthers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2009 and 2010. The Indiana High grad, who was named this week to the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame, played his college football at IUP and was an All-PSAC safety. After graduation he was a graduate assistant at Pitt under Mike Gottfried, then coached with his father at IUP from 1990 to ’98.
Cignetti spent 11 years coaching in the NFL with the Chiefs, 49ers, Rams, Giants, and Packers, and has been an offensive coordinator with the Rams, IUP, Pitt, Fresno State, North Carolina, California, Rutgers, and Boston College.
