While many are focused on Covid-19 and its many variants, influenza continues to be prevalent in Indiana County and across Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that Indiana County now has a total of 166 lab-confirmed flu cases, which is an increase of 30 over last week. The department also reported 133 cases of type A flu in Indiana County, which is 27 more than last week. 33 new cases of type B flu were reported in the county, which is an increase of only three cases.
Across the state, 3,351 new flu cases were reported. That brings the total number of lab-confirmed flu cases for the flu season so far is 26,143. 24,123 of those cases are considered type A flu, which is an increase of 3,007 cases over the last week. 344 new type B flu cases have been reported state-wide bringing the total to 2008. 12 type U cases have also been reported in the state.
So far, there have been 14 confirmed flu-related deaths in Pennsylvania. It was also reported that the number of hospital visits associated with flu-like illnesses has gone down over the last week. Compared to last year at this time, the number of hospital visits is up.
Again, this is just the number of lab confirmed cases. Many do not go to the doctor’s with flu symptoms, and many do not get tested for flu.
