The Penguins worked on the penalty kill yesterday, focusing for the first time this training camp on what was an area of strength for them last year. With the exception of the now-retired Jeff Carter, the PK unit remains intact this season.
Coach Mike Sullivan likes the way the penalty killers work together.
Sullivan has repeatedly said this year that we should not read anything from line combinations he is using at camp, but yesterday the practice was noticeably smoother as he reunited some players from last year, particularly on the top two lines.
He says he is still experimenting with his lines, and learning the games of the Penguins’ new players.
The Penguins are down to 62 players in camp with the reassignment yesterday of two 2024 draft picks to their junior teams. Second round pick Tanner Howe will play for Regina in the Western Hockey League this year. Seventh round choice Finn Harding was sent back to Brampton in the Ontario Hockey League.
The Pens play at Detroit on Saturday.
