UPDATE: Indiana Borough Police are continuing to investigate a reported stabbing that happened this morning near IUP campus.
Chief Justin Schawl said that at 12:25 this morning, officers were called out for a report of an injured person near the intersection of 7th and Washington Streets. Police found a 20-year-old man with what looked like a puncture wound in his lower back. The preliminary investigation revealed that there was a disturbance with several men described only to be in their 20’s involved in a fight. Witnesses are being interviewed along with some of the participants that have already been identified. Indiana Borough Police are being assisted by IUP police, State Police and Citizens Ambulance and the District Attorney’s office.
The incident was one of two that prompted a “shelter in place” message from IUP officials, which was lifted just before 9:00 this morning. The other incident was a reported assault at the Suites on Pratt that was originally reported at the Memorial Field House at 1:50 this morning. IUP Police have not released any information on that assault, except that it was not a random incident. That incident is still under investigation.
Chief Schawl and IUP officials emphasized that there is no threat to public safety at this time. Schawl also said they are not accepting any additional help from the community, but the investigation is continuing.
WHAT WE FIRST REPORTED AT 9:00 AM
A shelter-in-place order for IUP students was lifted within the last few minutes regarding an attack on campus.
Few details have been released by the IUP Police on the matter, but what we do know that it was a physical assault that happened outside the Suites on Pratt around 1:50 this morning. It was initially reported that the incident happened at the Memorial Field House, but the recent notification sent to the IUP community made the correction. They also said that the attack was not a random one.
Around the same time, IUP Police were informed of an incident of aggravated assault that happened at 12:15 this morning in the 200 block of South Seventh Street. Indiana Borough Police were called in for that investigation, and a later IUP notification said that the suspect in the off-campus assault was in custody.
Indiana Borough Police have not released any information on either incident. However, IUP Police are asking people to call them at 724-357-2141 if you have any information on the on-campus assault.
