The IUP Crimson Hawks are headed to the college football Division Two Super Region One Final after crushing West Chester, 44-10 Saturday at George P. Miller Stadium. Lenny Williams threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. IUP will host Assumption, a Massachusetts school, next Saturday at noon.
In college basketball, the IUP men used a 17-0 surge at the end of the first half and beginning of the second, cruising to an 80-57 win over the University of the Sciences. Dante Lombardi scored 20 points, Anthony Glover 18, and Cobo Diaz 14 for the Hawks.
In high school football, Ligonier Valley dropped out of the state playoffs with a 23-20 loss to Dunmore.
The PIAA has announced that Friday’s Homer-Center Wildcats and Steelton-Highspire PIAA Class A Semi-Final match-up will be played at Holidaysburg Senior High School. The Wildcats are 12-1 and fresh off of a big 20-14 upset of Bishop Guilfoyle Friday at Mansion Park that ended the 3-time defending District 6 and State Champion Marauders 59 game winning streak, which had been the 3rd longest active high school wining streak in the nation. Steelton-Highspire is 12-2 and they defeated Williams Valley 41-6 to advance to the final four. Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby each scored two goals, Bryan Rust added another, and Tristan Jarry made 33 saves to win his first NHL game as the Penguins beat Tampa Bay 5-2 Saturday night. The Pens will host the Philadelphia Flyers Monday night at 7PM.
