Bailey Falter gave up two runs on four hits in five-and-two-thirds innings. He says he just wasn’t good enough.
Game three of the series is tonight. The Pirates have not named their starter. The Cardinals will throw right-hander Sonny Gray (13-9, 3.75 ERA). Airtime is 7:20, first pitch at 7:45 on WCCS.
On the injury front, center fielder Oneil Cruz missed his second straight game with a sore ankle and pitcher Kyle Nicolas was unavailable after leaving Monday’s game with what Shelton described as a “hot spot” in his left side.
Pitcher Marco Gonzalez had left flexor tendon surgery last week and is wearing a brace on his UCL. His projected return is 12 months. He made only seven appearances for the Pirates this season.
INDIANAPOLIS
The Pirates still have one farm team playing. It’s Indianapolis, which lost to St. Paul, 4-2 last night. Top prospect Bubba Chandler threw 5-and-a-third innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Endy Rodriguez made his first Triple-A rehab start and had two hits.
