Paul Skenes was dominant again, but the Pirates had no offensive support for him as they dropped the first game of their four-game series in St. Louis. Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says Skenes was terrific, but his teammates couldn’t help him out.
Skenes faced the Cards for the third time this season, so he tried to mix up his repertoire last night.
Shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa had two of the Pirates’ four hits. He said Skenes deserved better than what the Bucs could give him.
Before the game, the Pirates recalled infielder/outfielder Nick Yorke from Indianapolis and sent Alika Williams to Indy. Yorke has hit .355 with two homers and 26 RBIs for the Indians since begin acquired from the Red Sox for pitcher Quinn Priester. He started at second base last night and was 0-for-3.
For tonight’s second game of the series, Bailey Falter [8-7, 4.20 ERA] pitches for the Pirates against the Cardinals’ Lance Lynn [6-4, 3.96 ERA]. Airtime is 7:20, first pitch at 7:45 on WCCS.
The Pirates have also begun working out left fielder Bryan Reynolds as an infielder, with an eye toward possibly switching him to first base in the future to extend his career. Yesterday, he took grounders both on his feet and on his knees.
