Sidney Crosby was born on 8-7-87. He wears number 87 for the Penguins and his salary cap hit for this season is…you guessed it…$8.7 million. Yesterday the Penguins signed Crosby to a two-year contract extension that carries an identical $8.7 million cap hit for each season. It kicks in next year, meaning Crosby is with the Pens for at least the next three seasons.
Crosby says he wants to play as long as he physically is able, and to continue to play with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang is important to him.
Crosby is eager to start training camp tomorrow, although he’s been working out at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex for weeks. He says this year’s camp will have a different feel than others.
The Pens’ captain enters his 20th season with the same goal he’s always had…competing for the Stanley Cup.
The top young future Penguins yesterday completed the Buffalo Sabres Prospect Challenge with an 8-5 win over the Sabres. Avery Hayes scored the natural hat trick with the first three Pens goals, his third, fourth, and fifth of the three-game tournament. Ville Koivunen, and Tristan Broz each scored two goals, and Mathieu De St. Phalle and Rutger McGroarty also scored.
The Penguins won all three of their games at the Challenge, winning the tournament championship for the second straight year. They beat the Bruins 6-3 on Friday and the Senators 4-2 on Saturday.
