TJ Watt may set a new NFL record for sacks in a single season on Sunday when the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Baltimore, but he already is the Steelers Most Valuable Player for the third straight season.
It’s the first time since the award was instituted in 1969 a player has been named the Steelers MVP for three straight seasons.
Watt will break Michael Strahan’s 20-year-old record of 22 ½ sacks if he collects a sack and a half against the Baltimore Ravens.
And speculation is the quarterback Watt will be attempting to bring down won’t be Lamar Jackson, but rather Tyler Huntley, who has lost all three of his starts since Jackson, the former Heisman Trophy winner, went down with an ankle injury.
The other storyline is the likelihood this will be the final game of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s career. He’s hinted at retirement following this season.
Roethlisberger could conceivably continue his career in the postseason, though that would require the Steelers to win this game and hope lowly Jacksonville, a 15 ½ point underdog, defeats Indianapolis on Sunday.
The Steelers announced today wide receiver Dionte Johnson and center Kendrick Green have been placed on the COVID list, joining cornerback Joe Haden and defensive coordinator Keith Butler.
Hear the game on WDAD beginning noon Sunday with the pregame show.
