Bailey Falter gave the Pirates another strong start yesterday as they swept the Marlins and set a franchise record in the process. It’s the first time ever that the Pirates have swept a season series of seven or more games against any opponent. Joe Block recaps the Buccos’ win.
Manager Derek Shelton says Falter was able to tie up the Marlins’ hitters by controlling the inside corner.
The Pirates are off today before they welcome the Kansas City Royals to PNC Park for the first of three games tomorrow night.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said yesterday that he fully expects Shelton to return as the Bucs’ manager next season. Shelton is 287-404 in his five seasons since replacing Clint Hurdle in 2019. Cherington said Shelton is “the right person to manage this team in 2025”.
Shelton says the vote of confidence is important to him. He says the Pirates are getting better and are growing as a team because they have solid pitching.
Cherington said he believes the Pirates are better than they were last year but are not good enough. He took responsibility for that and said he needs to “speed that improvement up.” He also announced more front office moves after the firing two weeks ago of international scouting director Junior Vizcaino. Research and development director Sean Ahmed has been let go and pro scouting director Will Lawton will be reassigned to another role within the organization.
INDIANAPOLIS
One of Cherington’s trade deadline acquisitions, second baseman Nick Yorke, was 4-for-4 with a home run and Thomas Harrington gave up just two runs in six-and-two-thirds innings as Indianapolis beat Rochester 6-4.
ALTOONA
Jase Bowen had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs as Altoona beat Richmond 8-7. Kervin Pichardo had two hits. Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez was the Curve’s designated hitter and doubled in five at-bats.
Emmanuel Chapman starts for the Curve tonight in the series’ third game.
