Paul Skenes set a Pirates rookie record and Oneil Cruz hit another tape-measure home run as the Pirates opened their series with the Marlins with a close victory. Joe Block recaps the win.
Skenes now has 151 strikeouts this season. He passed Cy Blanton’s Pirates rookie record of 143 strikeouts, set in 1935. Manager Derek Shelton says Skenes is unbelievable.
Shelton says Skenes is humble and always looking to learn.
David Bednar says, “It’s all about the bigger picture and making everybody’s day a little better.” Bednar has been nominated as the Pirates’ candidate for MLB’s Roberto Clemente Award for a third straight year, honoring the player “who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

ALTOONA CURVE
The Pirates will have an eastward eye on Altoona tonight even as they play the Marlins at PNC Park. Endy Rodriguez is expected to start at catcher when the Curve opens its final six-game series of the season against Richmond.
This will be the first time playing catcher for Rodriguez since having off-season Tommy John surgery. He injured his throwing elbow swinging a bat last November while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic. After this week, the Pirates plan to transfer him to Indianapolis to play in their season-ending series.
